“Are we there yet?”
Sound familiar? Kids and cars don’t often go well together. It’s the cramped quarters, complaining, messes, and sick stomachs that make road trips (no matter how short – we could be talking about a short run to the grocery store!) stressful and unenjoyable for drivers and travelers, alike! And while we don’t have a solution for tummy troubles, we can offer up a few ways to keep the kiddos entertained and the car clean. Thanks to these LOF-Xpress™ approved tips, riding in cars with kids just got a whole lot easier.
- Keep everything within reach.
We’re talking snacks, electronics, activities, drinks, etc. All of it. If it’s close, it saves you from searching, reaching, and ultimate frustration.
- Bring an activity tray.
This can be as easy as a cookie sheet or as fancy the one shown below. Either way, a tray gives kids a place to play, eat, and entertain themselves.
- Feed and water the children!
Snacks and drinks serve 2 purposes. They curb hunger AND serve as entertainment. And might we recommend non-messy snacks, along with spill-proof drinks?

- Utilize Electronics.
From audiobooks, tablets, and portable DVD players, to talking toys and smartphones. These are things that you might limit at home, but if you’re looking to make some serious mileage, it’s ok to relax the rules on screen time. Download plenty of educational AND just-for-fun movies, games, music, and apps before leaving the house.
- Get creative.
Long car trips are the perfect excuse to purchase all of those Dollar Store games/activities that your kids beg for, but you never buy. Here are just a few ideas:
- White boards and dry-erase pens
- Stickers
- Magnets (these work perfectly with the cookie sheet activity tray!)
- Activity books
- Crayons, markers, and coloring books

- A trip journal or notebook
- Pipe cleaners
- Make pit stops.
Small bladders, sore muscles, and boredom are all to blame for frequent stops. But they’re just part of traveling with little ones. Why not take advantage and plan the pit stops for cool places, fun attractions, or good restaurants? Stretching stops are part of the adventure, so embrace them and your kids will, too!
Nothing derails a fun family trip like boredom and bickering. A little forethought and preparation on the front end can help avoid boredom and bickering down the road (pun intended!).
As always, we’ll be here for your pre and post road trip car maintenance!
